Monday 8th March 2010 - Hunts Youth Cup (Semi Final)

St Ives Town 2 Somersham Town 1

(played at Westwood Road - attendance 87)

Manager's & Players Man of the Match : Jordan Butt (St Ives Town)

Tonight saw the Young Saints of St Ives Town fire themselves into the Final of the Hunts Youth Cup after overcoming a one goal deficit to grab two late goals and see off their neighbours from Somersham.

With a menacing front line of Leon Schwier, Conor Washington and Arran MacKay the Saints worked hard to stamp their authority of the game and with almost a dozen chances falling to several players, the supporters on the sidelines felt that this wasnt going to be Saints day. Things were worsened after 65 minutes when a neat move in the midfield allowed the Somersham striker to punce and slot home form 18 yards. With more chances squandered and the visiting custodian in fine form the frustration showed in the Saints but with ten minutes remaining Arran MacKay pounced onto a blocked shot from Washington and he calmly finished to draw the game level. With extra time on the cards St Ives managed to push once again and their tiredless efforts were rewarded into injury time and Conor Washington made sure of things after wriggling himself free of the Somersham defence.

This now sets up a Final showdown between St Ives Town and, again, near neighbours, Huntingdon Town who beat a promising Alconbury side in the previous round. After the game, Saints Manager; Darnell Dodd said "We set out tonight with a view of playing all out attack and this seemed to work in the first twenty minutes but with no goals. It seemed as though our lads switched off a bit and you cant do that against teams like this." he added "We do not fear anyone in this competition. I am looking forward to Thursday night now in the League as we face a trip to Bourne Town on Thursday"

Westwood Road finally saw some football action today but it wasnt a result that the home supporters enjoyed after seeing Eynesbury Rovers dominate at times but more importantly take their opportunities. Their first goal came after 51 minutes when a close range effort from John Cole found the back of Armitage's goal. After several chances to level the scores for the Saints, Rovers capitalised and made it 2-0 with a neat finish from Darren Blackall. Saints Manager; Wayne Singh commented "We havent played for a while because of this there was a lack of spirit and bond between the players. We were missing a couple of regular faces but we just didnt perform to what we are used to" he added "We are hoping to put things right on Wednesday night against Thrapston here at Westwood Road"

Statement from our Stadia & Ground Director - Ade Tattersall PDF Print E-mail

Thursday, 04 March 2010 21:26

With many recent games falling foul of the recent poor weather much has been said about the state of the pitch at Westwood Road and the lack of football being played.

The most important aspect of making any decision about whether a game should go ahead or not is purely down to the safety of the players and officials. We are not alone. Many other clubs are victims of waterlogged pitches and even at a higher level that Step 5 some games are being postponed even at the very last minute.

We have a team of people that are committed to working on the pitch trying to get these games to go ahead. Like all football clubs, it relies on revenue through the gate and with the bar being open. This is of course in our mind but we come back to player and officials safety as our primary objective.

Throughout the winter months the respective leagues appreciate and understand that some pitches will fall victim to constant poor weather but now the rain appears to have stopped and the water is gradually draining away the question is often asked;  well why can we not get a game on ?

The majority of the pitch appears to be fine at first glance but we have a couple of small problem areas that are very dangerous under foot. In this instance we have seen it more appropriate to gain some advice and guidance from a qualified referee or a league official who have made the necessary decision to give us the go ahead or, in recent weeks, to call the game off with as much notice as possible to all concerned including supporters, the opposition and officials.

In the close season we will be investigating the ‘problem areas’ and looking to improve the surface to prevent this problem arising again. It is a frustrating time for everyone involved with the football club whether you are a player, a board member or supporter. We appreciate your patience in this matter and hope that this statement will go some way to communicating with our loyal supporters.
